Dive the depths of the deep, dark ocean at night and witness the radiant creatures that glow and swim in the dark. Over 2 miles off the Kona coast in 5,000 feet of water, each diver is suspended from the boat at depths up to 50 feet to drift with the ocean current and the creatures that live here. Come witness for yourself the incredible bioluminescent dance of pelagic sea creatures swimming nightly through these waters.  Over eons of time, sea creatures such as jellyfish, fish and bacteria created chemical processes to emit light energy known as chemiluminescence. This is the same process used by fireflies on land to glow at night. Most marine bioluminescence is seen as blue-green light which become more visible when observed in the deep ocean.  Organisms exhibit bioluminescence for many reasons, including hunting prey, defense against predators, and finding mates. Some employ counterillumination using their glow of light to blend into light sources from above. Effectively hiding in plain sight from predators hunting from below.

Joshua Lambus is best known for his macro work featuring rarely seen animals from the deep. He photographs these animals on a dive called the Blackwater.  Traveling miles offshore late at night, he positions himself above water many thousands of feet deep. There he waits for the denizens of the deep to come drifting by. Many of these animals are light-sensitive and live far beyond the reach of light during the day. At night however, they migrate to the surface to feed and absorb oxygen.

Joshua has logged more than 500 blackwater dives, cataloging his finds with researchers from all over the world. Monterey Bay Aquarium and Scripps Institute have called on his expertise in this field to help find usually impossible to find animals. His images have won multiple international awards. They have also garnered the attention of, and been published by the likes of National Geographic, BBC, the Smithsonian Natural History Museum and many other publications and museums from around the world.

Dolphins, Manta Rays and Whales are wild creatures and seasonal changes, surf conditions, and plankton in the water influence their presence. No guarantees are made for their presence, however you may come again for FREE if the animal of your adventure is not sighted during your charter.
