TURTLE PINNACLE
(Average depth 40 ft) This popular dive area, located just north of the channel into Honokohau Harbor, is haven to green sea turtles. Turtle Pinnacle is so named because of an isolated underwater rock formation standing upright at this site. The pinnacle is also inhabited by numerous species of reef fish which provide a cleaning service to the green sea turtles. The turtles are often seen feeding on fish scraps inside the harbor and apparently enjoy this nearby cleaning and resting station. Please heed your divemaster's instructions not to interfere with the resting turtles; they are protected by law in Hawaii but can present excellent photo opportunities for visiting divers who obey the laws barring encroachment and pursuit. They are curious creatures who often come in close for a better view of you if you are patient and non aggressive. |
